Abstract
Taiwan's and the People's Republic of China's (PRC) bids to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for a Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), and the US's position on CPTPP-related issues (including US membership), pose familiar challenges in an altered context. For Taiwan and China, the reasons for joining the significant trade agreement are partly economic but are also political. Taiwan's and China's parallel pursuits of CPTPP inevitably implicate issues of Taiwan's international status and stature and US–China–Taiwan relations.
